On Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2012, Jack Milan MSW, with his extensive history of contemplative wisdom and experience, presented an evening workshop “Praying with the Rosary” at Loyola House chapel. His engaging and informed presentation captured over 35 participants undivided attention for two hours as he led us through the meaning and history of the rosary and repetitive prayer. His beautiful images of Mary with shared prayer in candle light  offered a memorable sacred experience. He  established how  bringing Mary back into our repertoire provides an essential feminine archetype to help heal us and our troubled world. Sacred Wisdom Centre is so grateful for his work.

On Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, Philip Shepherd, author of  “New World New Self: Recovering Our Senses in the Twenty-First Century gave a stimulating and informative talk “Lowering our Consciousness” to an attentive audience of over 30 people in the Hallman Room of Dublin Street United Church in Guelph. He brilliantly explored the tenants of his work and led us to experience the lower consciousness of our body to access a deeper source of wisdom than our head alone can reach. His pioneering work is a remarkably important contribution to the unfolding consciousness our world is starving for. We look forward to more opportunities to follow his expanding career with future talks in Guelph. The fee for the talk was $15.00 and $12.00 for unwaged participants.

For six Mondays at the E-Bar,  John Lawson and Barbara Susan Booth had the rewarding experience of co-facilitatingConversations on Hope”. Welcoming lively and engaging conversations they explored with the group the exciting new book: "Active Hope: How to Face the Mess We're in Without Going Crazy" by Joanna Macy PhD and Chris Johnstone MD. It proved an ideal motivation for individual insights and group discussion on navigating the challenging times we are experiencing. The Bookshelf generously provided the venue and ordered the books for us. The series was $80.00 for waged participants and $40.00 for unwaged.

On Thursday, Mar. 7, 2013, Karen Kurtz seamlessly captured the attention of over 45 people in the Loyola House Chapel as she gave her unique talk “The Stations of the Cross:  A Way Toward Wholeness” with exquisite images of renowned sculptor Helmut Lutz.  Karen, an exceptionally creative Zurich-trained Jungian Analyst, shared her own discovery of the Stations of the Cross as a metaphor for the relationship between the Ego and the Self, on our evolutionary journey to psychological wholeness. Within these stations, used for centuries to meditate on the deepest suffering of Christ, Karen found a profound psychological wisdom showing how we may move out of our own suffering and brokenness into more meaning and wholeness. On this April weekend, Anne Hillman led a dynamic retreat “An Unbroken Intimacy with Life” at Loyola House sponsored by The Elderberry Connection and Sacred Wisdom Centre. Using themes from her celebrated book “Awakening the Energies of Love” she prepared the path for deep listening to Life’s subtle promptings in ourselves and others.

Experiencing our interconnectedness with all of life evolved from our preparatory journaling on intimacy and movement, meditation and reflection during the retreat. Anne generously offered personal consultations and skillfully facilitated the 60 participants with her intuitive and visceral consciousness. The residential retreat was offered for a special rate of $350.00 inclusive thanks to the collaboration with The Elderberry Connection.

On Saturday, May 18, 2013, Jack Milan MSW taught a unique and inspired workshop “Celebrating Mary: A Woman Wrapped in Silence” at St. Brigid’s Villa. It was preceded by a moving liturgy for Mary offered by Bill Clarke S.J. at St. Francis’ Chapel. A whole day of focus and reverence for the Sacred Feminine in the Christian tradition was gratefully appreciated by the participants. Jack’s wealth of wisdom, experience and conviction about the contemporary mission of Mary in the world was expertly shared. Bill’s depth of expertise, receptivity and compassion was seamlessly contributed in the liturgy. On Mary’s day, in Mary’s month we were invited to an experience of the living presence of Mary among us through a weaving of the Eucharist, input and conversation, imagery, music and prayer.

On Friday, May 24, 2013, John Philip Newell PhD, poet, peacemaker, minister and scholar gave a breathtaking presentation “A New Harmony: the Spirit, the Earth, & the Human Soul” at St. George’s Anglican Church in Guelph.

Drawing from his most recent book, his resonance with Celtic spirituality and respect for the Christian household,  he graciously encouraged us to remember our inherent connectedness, acknowledge our brokenness and look for the unifying harmony of common perspectives in all religions and all life rather than focusing on differences which have driven us apart. He was Warden (Abbot) of Iona Abbey and  now Companion Theologian for the American Spirituality Center of Casa del Sol in New Mexico. John Philip is a Canadian and a Presbyterian minister who received his PhD in Celtic Spirituality in Edinburgh. He lives in Scotland where he and his wife raised their four children. The talk was sponsored by St. George’s Church, The Guelph Seminar and Sacred Wisdom Centre and offered for a fee of $15.00. The Bookshelf sold his books which he signed following the presentation. From Monday to Wednesday, June 3-5, 2013, Mariabruna Sirabella (LMFT, MS) led an amazingly creative workshop “Dance with Light and Shadow: An In-Depth SoulCollage® Workshop on the Personal Shadow”  held at Maria Pezzano’s studio on Suffolk Street in Guelph. From Friday to Sunday, June 7-9, 2013 the workshop was repeated with a new group of participants at St. Brigid’s Villa, Ignatius Jesuit Centre in Guelph. Mariabruna, with her respectful integrity, masterfully introduced the participants to a depth of inner work uncovering some of our personal shadow material. She offered unique ways to integrate this consciously into our personality using the SoulCollage® cards we made during the workshop. Her sensitive and mature support of participants reflected the depth of her insight and her extensive experience and training. She is the most senior instructor with Seena Frost’s SoulCollage® Facilitator Training, a founder of BodYnvocations™: Imagination in Motion, and a holistic clinician.  She facilitates programs and rituals internationally blending ancient wisdom and Jungian humanistic psychology to lighten the personality and free the soul.  We were thrilled to bring her to Guelph from California and look forward to her return in 2014. The exchange for the workshop was $350.00 including HST.

On Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, Paramahansa Jagadish contributed a powerful transmission of healing energy to a welcoming and appreciative group of  22 participants. He is a master healer with 40 years of dedicated spiritual discipline rooted in Eastern Yogic, Hawaiian, Buddhist and Mystical Christian practices.  His lifetime dedication to awakening others to Divine Grace was readily apparent in his humble, compassionate and generous contribution to the participants. Sacred Wisdom Centre was delighted to partner with Mel Finnerty's "Sacred Gatherings and Events" from NYC to host Paramahansa Jagadish for a Guelph stop on his Eastern North American tour from his home in Los Angeles.“Sharing Divine Light” was held at St. Brigid’s Villa, Ignatius Jesuit Centre for an exchange of $20.00.

On Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 17-18th, 2013, Barbara Susan Booth facilitated a residential SoulCollage® workshop at a retreat guesthouse in Grey county. A small group shared the generous hospitality of our host and delved into their own inner spiritual wisdom with the SoulCollage® process developed by Seena Frost. Barbara introduced an experiential process to explore the underlying concepts of SoulCollage® and invited participants to create cards for an animal companion, the grateful inner child and an archetypal image personally relevant in their individual life. We did readings to inform our personal journeys in groups of three. The joy of companionship and celebration pervaded our weekend together as we entered more deeply into our spiritual journeys and shared our process.. The inclusive weekend cost was $350 plus HST.

For four Mondays in November, John Lawson and Barbara Susan Booth facilitated a series of conversations on Richard Rohr’s interesting book “Falling Upwards”. Rohr gave us an understanding of how the heartbreaks, disappointments, and first loves of life are actually stepping stones to the spiritual joys that the second half of life has in store for us.

We were delighted with an encouraging response of 20 participants who enjoyed the welcoming and creative atmosphere of the E-Bar and the open and authentic sharing of the group members. We felt privileged to contribute to such a responsive gathering of spiritually interested people. The series cost $60 with an alternative fee of $30 for those requiring adjustment.

On Wed, Nov. 6th 7:00pm - 9:00pm, at Three Willows United Church, John Buttars presented a spell-binding, informed, and deeply personal talk to over 100 people who braved a cold rainy night to be present to this rare opportunity. John shared his inner explorations of the grief and the gifts that have emerged for him in the rapidly shifting religious and spiritual landscapes of our time. He courageously asked us the big questions that he has grappled with: Are religions life-affirming or the opposite? Has Christianity developed into a conquest religion? Are churches filled with functional atheists? John is a well-known pillar of the Guelph community, serving for 30 years as minister of Harcourt United Church, having an honoured and long standing connection with Ignatius Jesuit Centre and now in his retirement, supporting the Chambers Community Services Centre. He very generously granted the proceeds of his talk to the latter and Sacred Wisdom Centre. He will facilitate related discussion on talk Sat. morning Feb. 22, 2014. The price to attend the talk was $15 and to attend the discussion will be $20.

On Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, Brenda McMorrow and her talented musicians wowed a full house in the Dublin Street United Church sanctuary with a Kirtan to celebrate her new album “Igniting the Beauty”.  (Musicians with Brenda above NaradaWise, JesseTurton and Shannon Kingsbury and later joined by Tanis Slimmon). Brenda, a Canadian Devotional Kirtan artist expresses her deep devotion to the unveiling and celebration of our true beings through the power of sound. She is invited to travel worldwide to share her unique blend of original folk-inspired melodies, world beats and sacred Indian devotional chants. This exceptional concert was truly a rare privilege to host in Guelph, her hometown, and well deserving of the energetic standing ovation! The Bookshelf and yoga studios helped sell the tickets $20.00 in advance and they were $25.00 at the door.
